The railing is what people notice first.
A deck can be framed perfectly and still look unfinished with the wrong railing. Cable railing is the choice for an open, modern look that keeps the view clear. Hog-wire panels give a farmhouse feel, and traditional wood or metal baluster systems suit a more classic house. We build and install all of them.

How cable railing works.
Strong posts do the work
Tensioned cable pulls hard on the posts, so they have to be solid and well anchored. Weak posts are the most common reason a cable rail looks sloppy.
Stainless, run tight
Horizontal stainless runs are pulled to tension and finished with fittings that can be tightened later if they relax over time.
Height and spacing
Local code sets a minimum rail height and a maximum opening. We lay the rail out to meet it, which is one reason spacing is decided before we order parts.
Cable, hog-wire, wood, or metal baluster.
The right railing depends on the house, the view, and how you use the deck. If you have a view to protect, cable railing gives the most open sightline. If the house has a rustic or farmhouse look, hog-wire fits better. Wood balusters read as traditional, and metal balusters give a clean, low-maintenance line.
Our cable railing cost and options guide compares them side by side, including what changes the price and what to ask before you sign.
- Open sightlines with cable railing
- Farmhouse character with hog-wire panels
- Classic look with wood or metal balusters
- Stair railing and handrails matched to the deck rail
- New railing on a new build, or a new look on an existing deck once the framing checks out
Railing works best as part of the deck plan.
Railing is easiest to get right when it is planned with the deck. If you are still deciding on the structure, start with our custom deck building page. If you want to enclose the space, look at screened and covered porches. On sloped, view-facing lots, like many in Hoover and Mountain Brook, the railing style matters even more.
